Story of Marije, (Netherlands)

One year ago I started my preparations to go to Ghana. Now one year later I’m back home again and had the most amazing summer of my life, with the biggest and most beautiful experience I will ever have. 2 days before leaving I packed my suitcases with all the stuff I got from my sponsors for the children in the orphanage. I was so excited to go to get my experience to Africa, finally!

When I was in the airplane, I was thinking by myself what on earth am I doing? Alone, to Africa?

But as soon as my plane landed I was excited to see my family and the children in the orphanage. I was placed in Kumasi and my workplace was in the Kumasi Children’s Home. A big orphanage with different units for a lot of children. In the beginning of the trip I really had a culture shock. It was hard for me to see how many differences there are between Ghana and where I live in the Netherlands.

Story of Sonne, (Netherlands)

On October 8 I left my home to go on the most amazing trip I have ever made in my life. I went to Ghana. When I got on the plane I had my first taste of Ghana, there where a lot of Ghanaians on the plane (surprise surprise). They were all so nice, a few asked me if it was my first time to Ghana, what I was going to do, they are really interested in you and so nice and friendly. You are welcome is a sentence they use a lot and whenever you look like you need a little help they will offer to help you. I immediately felt ‘at home’. That feeling didn’t change, it got even stronger the longer I stayed there.

I stayed with a hostfamily, which is really nice because you get to know the culture so well and you start feeling at home really quick. I had the most fantastic hostfamily and as they said: You will always have family in Ghana and we are family! And that started from the first day and we grew even closer in the months I’ve been there.

Story of James, (England)

My time in Ghana was undoubtedly a life changing experience that not only improved my career prospects but also allowed me to gain an invaluable insight into a different culture.

The public health voluntary work I undertook taught me clinical and communication skills that will serve me for years as well as proving extremely beneficial in my medical school application.

The staff and host family were incredibly helpful and welcoming, not only making me feel at home in Ghana but allowing me to appreciate the local customs and traditions.

Each weekend myself and other volunteers would travel to different parts of the country, this allowed us to visit national parks, beach resorts and waterfalls, some truly unforgettable memories!

I would not hesitate to return to Ghana and intend to do so during my elective, it was one of the best experiences I've had and I would highly recommend Interglobal Builder to anyone considering volunteering in Ghana.
